UPDATE: Scott County Mans Charges Raised to Attempted Murder

(Scottsburg, Ind.) - The Scottsburg Police Department released a statement today regarding the change of charges against Mr. Howard. 

The statement is as follows:

After review from the Scott County Prosecutors Office Mr. Howards charges have been amended to the following:

  • Attempted Murder Attempted intentional killing of another.,
  • Aggravated Battery Use when the assault poses a substantial risk of death., 
  • Battery by Means of a Deadly Weapon,
  • Unlawful Poss. of a Firearm by Serious Violent Felon, 
  • Criminal Recklessness def. shoots a firearm into a building.,
  • Escape def. knowingly or intentionally violates a home detention order OR intent

(Scottsburg, Ind.) – On Monday, August 24, at approximately 12:42 a.m. Officers Troy Ford and Sent Helton with the Scottsburg Police Department received a report of multiple shots fired.

The caller stated that the shots were coming from the North Side of Lake Lola near Lane Street.

During the initial investigation, officers found that a vehicle and residence in the area had been struck with gunfire.

Detective Lt. Steve Herald began an investigation that led to the arrests of the alleged shooter Detai Howard. Howard was taken into custody during a traffic stop and is currently being held at the Scott County Security Center on the charges of; criminal recklessness – armed with a deadly weapon, possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, escape – failure to return to lawful detention.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
