A third person sent to an Indianapolis hospital with serious injuries.
Monday, October 8, 2018, at approximately 11:45 pm, the Indiana State Police responded to a crash where a train collided with a vehicle near Edinburgh that claimed the lives of two of the vehicle’s occupants and sent the third to an Indianapolis hospital with serious injuries.
The initial investigation by Trp. Korry Clark indicated that a red 1996 Jeep Cherokee being driven by Joshua L. Kelso, age 20, was traveling eastbound on County Road 900 North near County Road 250 East in Bartholomew County. The vehicle disregarded a stop sign and entered a railroad crossing into the path of a southbound Louisville-Indiana Railroad train consisting of two engines only. The train collided with the driver’s side of the vehicle. The force pushed the Jeep down the tracks before it left the tracks and rolled over before coming to a stop.
As a result of the collision, Kelso and a backseat passenger, Justice M. Llewellyn, age 20, sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced deceased at the scene by the Bartholomew County Coroner’s Office. The front seat passenger, Myranda Akers, age 26, was ejected from vehicle. She was flown to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana for treatment of serious injuries.
The train engineer, Jeremy R. Peacock, age 35, Scottsburg, Indiana, and conductor, Leon A. Fuetini, age 26, Shelbyville, Kentucky were not injured in the collision.
The investigation is ongoing at this time with toxicology results pending.
