Two Arrested with Help from Madison K-9 Officer

MPD arrest 2 on multiple charges

March 11, 2023, Madison Police K-9 Officer Trent Smith executed a traffic stop, in the area of Clifty Dive & Ivy Tech Drive, on a vehicle driven by Brandon Duncan 38, Madison, Indiana.  Officer Smith stopped the vehicle for a traffic violation and suspicious activity.  A passenger in the vehicle was identified as Derick R. Carder 35, Madison, Indiana.

The subsequent investigation revealed that Duncan was operating the vehicle without a valid drivers license,  K-9 Colt was deployed and conducted an open air sniff around the vehicle, the K-9 gave his handler a positive indication for the presence of narcotics. 

With probable cause established, a search of the vehicle was conducted.  Officers located methamphetamine, hypodermic needles, and paraphernalia associated with the use of drugs.

In addition to the narcotics, officers located items in the vehicle that had just been stolen from a nearby campsite.  

Both subjects were taken into custody and transported to the Jefferson County, Jail, where they face the following preliminary alleged charges:

Derick Carder - L-6 felony possession of methamphetamine, L-6 felony possession of hypodermic needles, L-6 residential entry, L-6 burglary & B misdemeanor possession of paraphernalia. 

Brandon Duncan - L-6 resisting law enforcement (failed to stop vehicle in a timely manner) L-6 possession of methamphetamine, L-6 felony possession of a hypodermic needle, L-6 felony residential entry, L-6 felony burglary, and B misdemeanor possession of paraphernalia. 

All charges are alleged, both  Brandon Duncan and Derick Carder have the presumption of innocence until otherwise proven guilty.  Officer Cameron Blankenship assisted Officer Smith with the stop and investigation.
