Subject Arrested For Driving Drunk On A Golf Cart

Had also used marijuana

According to a release from the Madison Police Department, at approximately 11:43 p.m. on June 28 officers observed a golf cart disregard a stop sign at the intersection of West and Fifth streets and initiated a traffic stop. Officers observed the driver, identified as Charles Bersch, was unsteady on his feet when he exited the gold cart.

Bersch allegedly told officers he had been drinking earlier in the day, and officers initiated field sobriety tests and administered a portable breath test. The breath test showed Bersch’s blood alcohol concentration was above the legal limit of .08 percent. Bersch also allegedly admitted to using marijuana, and marijuana was found on Bersch’s person.

Bersch was placed under arrest and transported to the Jefferson County Jail.

The Madison Police department would like to remind individuals owning or operating golf carts on city streets that all traffic laws must be obeyed, and that golf carts may not be driven where prohibited by city ordinance.
