INDIANAPOLIS - Secured School Safety Grant applications are open for all public and private schools until July 1. Since the program started in 2013, schools have received $163 million in matching grants statewide and nearly $30 million is available this grant cycle.

Funds can be used for safety measures like support for resource and law enforcement officers in schools, equipment and technology, active-event warning systems, and support services for students and parents. In 2023, the Indiana General Assembly expanded eligible uses for the grants to include funding for needed technology upgrades and improved coordination with local government and law enforcement.

Last year, 474 Hoosier schools received nearly $30 million in state matching grants. Locally, schools in Dearborn, Switzerland, Ohio, and Jefferson counties received more than $668,000 in matching funds:

• Lawrenceburg Community School Corp., $100,000;
• Madison Consolidated Schools, $100,000;
• Pope John XXIII Elementary School, $50,000;
• Rising Sun-Ohio County Community School Corp., $70,000;
• Shawe Memorial High School, $47,470;
• South Dearborn Community School Corp., $70,000;
• Southwestern-Jefferson County Consolidated School Corp., $31,216;
• Sunman-Dearborn Community School Corp., $100,000; and
• Switzerland County School Corp., $100,000.

School safety remains a top priority for me as your state representative and these matching grants continue to help schools in our area and throughout Indiana enhance their security so they can provide a quality learning environment.
