(Frankfort, KY.) - Wednesday, February 19, the Kentucky House unanimously passed a bill that would cut the price of insulin in the state.
House Bill 12 will now help more than 500 thousand Kentuckians with diabetes. The bill was passed 92-0 and would cap the price of insulin to $100 per month per person.
The typical cost of insulin, according to Rep. Danny Bentley of Russel who is the supporter of the bill, is $12,000 or more per person per month.
According to the American Diabetes Association, the cost has gone up more than 500 percent in the last decade.
Many with diabetes have said they cut back their ration of insulin due to the cost, which is endangering their health.
This bill will only apply to those with health insurance, excluding those with state employee plans and Medicaid.
The next step for the bill is to go to the Kentucky Senate and if it passes there then it will be signed into law by Governor Andy Beshear.
