Madison Mayor Bob Courtney and Madison Police released statement regarding yesterday's tragedy

Pray for the families

"Today our community is faced with heartache as we mourn the lives lost in yesterday’s tragic event.

When police pursuits end in tragedy our officers, first responders, and entire community are significantly impacted.

We are grateful to all of those who did their best to prevent this tragedy from happening while keeping our community safe. We value the partnerships with the Indiana State Police, Jefferson County Sheriff's Department, Hanover Police Department, Madison Fire Department, Hanover Fire Department, and King's Daughters' Hospital EMS who were all on scene. We want to thank them for their efforts yesterday afternoon and give our support to them during this time.

More importantly, we want to share our deepest condolences with all individuals affected by this tragedy, especially the families who lost loved ones. We ask that the public respect the privacy of the families affected and allow them time to grieve.

The City of Madison is continuing to work in partnership with all agencies involved and the Madison Police Department is working closely with the Indiana State Police on their investigation."

The Madison Police Department has made the following information available to the public.

On January 9th, at approximately 3:45 pm officers with the Madison Police Department attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle when it began to flee north onto Cragmont St.  Officers pursued the vehicle north on State Rd. 7 leading into Jennings County and eventually coming back into Jefferson County on the eastside of Kent. At some point on State Rd. 256 the vehicle lost control, leaving the roadway, striking a utility pole. The Indiana State Police is investigating the incident.

The Madison Police was assisted by the Indiana State Police, Jefferson County Sheriff's Department Hanover Police Department, Madison Fire Department, Hanover Fire Department, and King's Daughters' Hospital EMS.

The Madison Police Department and the City of Madison take police pursuits very seriously. We mourn the lives lost yesterday and ask that the community come together to pray for the individuals and families affected.

All questions should be directed to the Indiana State Police.
