The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement agencies have received multiple reports of an active scam victimizing residents.
A scammer is contacting individuals claiming to be a representative of Publishers Clearing House. Victims are being contacted via telephone.
The scammer is telling their victim they have won $10 million. They then tell their victim that they must pay the taxes in advance to receive the prize.
In total two separate victims have made reports to law enforcement. Each victim has reported a loss of $8,000 each.
Scammers will often use software to alter numbers that show up on call ID, to make them appear local. They may also appear as a legitimate business.
Anyone that pressures you to take immediate action is likely a scammer.
